In Praise Of Others
Bhaktin Sharon Winner-Allamon
When I first became involved in Krsna Consciousness, i.e. doing more than just reading pamphlets and listening to Shelter, there were so many new things to learn about and discover. So of course along with all of these new things came little bits of anxiety and confusion. And even after more than a year of attending Bhagavad-Gita classes, visiting temples and associating with devotees sometimes such feelings pop up here and there. But because of the devotees with whom I associate, this anxiety is depleted and my confusion becomes understanding.
We all turn to our books and read the words of Krsna, Caitanya, Prabhupada and many others when we need clarification of thought or feeling. And these books that we read or the lectures that we may hear from living or deceased gurus help us tremendously. But it is the devotees that help us understand these teachings even more. It is Bhakta Don who gives me reassurance when I feel intimidated because I am not as advanced as the others. It's with Mother Myra and Mother Tanya that I can talk about girl stuff. It's Bhakta Jim who constantly takes calls from me when I have
questions or worries. And it is Mother Krsnanandini who helps me understand the words of Krsna and Prabhupada’s explanations of them, and encourages me to ask questions and is supportive. The list goes on and on, and I do not have enough space to tell how each devotee is special to me or how each devotee has their own way of putting a smile on my face. I love each devotee and praise the unique kindness that each one of them possess.
I must stress the importance of association. Other devotees can be your friend and/or your teacher, among many other things. Together we can all experience the words and workings of Krsna and learn to love Him. You can share your thoughts and ideas and learn from one another. Association, I believe, is one of the most important parts of advancement in Krsna consciousness, and every devotee should take part. All glories to the Cleveland Nama Hatta devotees!
